1.Calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate). Your BMR is the amount of calories your body needs to maintain basic bodily functions like breathing and digestion. This is the minimum number of calories you need to eat each day. Keep in mind that no calculator will be 100% accurate, so you may need to adjust these numbers as you learn more about your own metabolism.

2.Calculate your activity level. For a week or so, keep an activity journal and use a calorie calculator to figure out how many calories you burn while sitting, standing, exercising, lifting weights, etc. throughout the day. Another, easier option is to wear a heart rate monitor that calculates calories burned. After a week, add your totals for each day and average them out to get a general idea of how many calories you burn each day.

3.Keep track of how many calories you eat. For at least a week, enter and track your calories online (e.g., with Calorie Count) or use a food journal to write down what you eat and drink each day. Be as accurate as possible, measuring when you need to or  looking up nutritional information for restaurants, if you eat out. After a week, add your totals for each day and average them out to get a general idea of how many calories you eat each day.

4.Add it up. Take your BMR number and add your activity calories. Then subtract your food calories from that total. If you're  eating more than your BMR + your activity calories, you're at risk for gaining weight.

Do you know how much exercise do you need? well it varies from person to person but generally it is recommended at least 250 minutes per week, which comes out to about 50 minutes, 5 days a week. If you're a beginner, start small, for example with 3 days of cardio for 15-30 minutes, gradually adding time each week to give your body time to adapt.

Drink more water. The unfortunate fact is that most people don’t drink enough water, and the more unfortunate fact is that not many realize the importance of water not just for losing weight but for our overall health.Why is water so important? Our bodies are made up of about 50–70% water, and virtually every cell and organ function in our entire anatomy and physiology depend on it. There’s no way the body can work without it, in the same way that a car cannot run without fuel.  Water is needed to transport nutrients and oxygen through the blood to every cell in the body. Other vital functions of water are regulating body temperature and metabolism, and as a lubricant.

Losing just 2% of the body’s water supply can seriously degrade physical and mental functions (symptoms include fuzzy short-term memory, difficulty with simple math and in focusing on smaller print). Being 15% dehydrated is likely to be fatal. It can take weeks for vitamin deficiencies to make you sick, but severe dehydration can kill you in a matter of days or even hours.

We lose water through normal bodily functions, i.e. breathing, perspiration, excretion of urine and feces. And since our bodies cannot store water, we must ensure that we drink enough of it every day. For the body to function properly, its water supply must be continually replenished by consuming water, other beverages, and foods that contain water.How much water do you need to drink? To play it safe, most adults should drink up to eight 8-oz. glasses of water every day. You’ll need to drink more if you’re exercising or performing some strenuous physical activity.

For weight loss purposes, drink an extra glass of water for every 25 lbs. of excess weight. It’s also important not to go without water for too long. For example, you drink several glasses of water for 5 hours, and then go without for another 5. That simply won’t work; you have to keep yourself hydrated at all times.But how does water help you lose weight? If you drink a glass of water before a meal, it will fill you up – without adding any  calories – and you end up eating less. With plenty of water in your system, your body will work better and burn calories more efficiently. And think about this: two 12-oz. bottles of soda pop contain about 15 tsp. of sugar. Replacing high-calorie beverages with plain water can significantly reduce calories.
